1. Ctrl+J to get layer 1
2. Create a new layer between background and layer 1 and color it to what you like
3. Click layer 1 and then click “image”–> “adjustment”–> “Desaturate”
4. “image” –>“adjustment” –> “levels” and use the eyedropper tool to pick the color above the cat (remember to click the first eyedropper among those 3 in the popup window before clicking the black background)
5. Set the layer mode as “screen” then create a new layer then use “history brush tool” to get the outline of the cat
Finally…

great tutorial..but I wonder about “then create a new layer then use “history brush tool”” .. where I have to create the new layer? over all the others or in between them?

I’d like the same information as Max, The beginning of this is really easy to understand, but I get lost at the 4-5 steps, what is the purpose of the adjustment levels and the eyedropper? Also how do I change the layer mode to screen?

Layer 1 set as screen mode (in LAYERS…you will see the box below the LAYER text together with the opacity and fill…its always set as NORMAL…just change it in SCREEN) then create a new layer where you can trace the outline of your image…if your done tracing, click the eye of the layer 1 then you will see the outcome of your work!
